I have read and loved all of Kathy Herman's books, but feel this is her best series yet. She always creates great characters, but the Cummings family is the most likable yet, and part of that may be because of the ages of the kids made the books all the more likable. The first 2 books in this series were really awesome, and have been eager to read the 3rd and final book.... and it did not disappoint. The plot was intricate, yet easy to follow, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat.
I applaud Herman's addressing the issue of premarital sex, and in such a great and compassionate way. Through fiction, she showed the effect if can have on people, and why God intends sex to be in marriage between one man and one woman.
I was sad to see this series end, and wish there was one more book, but the series had a great ending with this awesome read.

A Treacherous Mix A Novel Ozark Mountain Trilogy Kathy Herman 9780781408059 Books Reviews
Kathy Herman wraps up her Ozark Mountain Trilogy with a novel that, while fairly well-written, disappointed me after Only By Death. A Treacherous Mix focuses on oldest Cummings son Hawk and the disastrous consequences of his affair with a mysterious woman who's new in town. Their trajectory leads to heavy physical and spiritual consequences--so heavy that the FBI gets involved.
Kathy always does a good job with suspense, and A Treacherous Mix is no exception. It marks the first time she brings the feds into a small-town mystery for any significant page time, and she handles it well. Hawk and the Cummings family's interactions with law enforcement feel real, both from an emotional standpoint and the standpoint of how law enforcement works in the real world. There's also a lot of intrigue based on who Hawk's paramour Kennedy Taylor actually is and why her disappearance throws his life into a tailspin.
Overall though, A Treacherous Mix isn't Kathy's strongest offering for the Ozark Mountain Trilogy or even in her entire book list. Much of the characters' introspection and dialogue is repetitious. A lot of it concerns the sin of Hawk's affair, which makes the spiritual arc feel like a forced Sunday school lesson for teens. As noted, the suspense is good, but Kathy leaves a lot of blanks. That is, the characters and stakes are not developed enough that I actually cared much what was going to happen. For instance, readers are told (not shown) that certain characters are highly dangerous and willing to kill for what they want. But the FBI operation put in place to catch these villains seems written in a rush. It's never 100% clear what the antagonists want or why, or how it would affect anyone who doesn't live in Foggy Ridge, AR. (One would think, with terrorism involved, the stakes would be a lot higher). When Hawk does have a confrontation, it's almost boring because the villain seems to give up too easily.
The plot drags in places, with characters doing or saying the same things over and over. Once again, a lot of the novel seems thrown together. However, A Treacherous Mix didn't turn me off; I'll be eager to see if Kathy does better with her next book.
Great book, but then again all of hers are! Hard to put down!
I love Kathy Herman and this book does not disappoint. When you think it’s over, it’s not and another adventure begins.
This was a great book! The story shows how we can be weak and make bad choices, Our savior is still faithful to us! Never stops loving us! It also kept up guessing what was going to happen next!!
As usual an awesome book by kathy Herman. Her novels take you places that you did not think you would go. I found myself praying for her characters.
.
I like Kathy's writing and typically enjoy her books. The storyline in this book was suspenseful but there wasn't enough suspense. The story seemed to move slowly and it seemed to be because of all the family members that were fretting and constantly talking. I enjoyed the few times it was suspenseful but overall the book did not keep my interest.
I looked forward to this book as it was the end of the trilogy. There was suspense, but the part I felt was so good about this book was the stand taken on premarital sex, so accepted and so prevalent in our society. While the main character finally felt forgiven, there were consequences, which are well pointed out.
There was a character introduced in the last chapter which needed more backstory.
