When Ruth Butler escaped Texas for a sleepy seaside village in the south of England, it was to rescue her infant daughter from the perverted demon she’d married. But after ten peaceful years in Perrins Point, her daughter Annie disappears.
Not far away, a madman has been trying in vain to turn back time. When Ruth turns out to be a dead ringer for his mother, the voices in his head haunt him day and night. The only way to stop his mother’s nagging is to kill her all over again . . .
Ruth must rely on her instincts and the ally she finds in an undercover detective who’s in town on unrelated business, but neither can search for Annie’s kidnapper openly. Ruth could be deported for living under an alias and Detective Inspector Jon Graham would blow his cover. Nevertheless, the trail leads from a faceless body in Annie’s clothes to a smugglers’ cave, where the killer drains his victims’ blood an ounce at a time. But he’s got a special purpose for little Annie. He is patient. He will wait—until her mother comes to save her.

I bought this book from the author a year ago and just now have gotten around to reading it.I am giving it a good four stars because I feel like it really sucked me in but it wasn't without it's faults. Most of the main characters are fairly developed but I would have loved to see more depth to some, especially Annie and also her friend Dot. The latter is not mentioned much in the book beyond the initial start.
This book is very well detailed and it was great to read but sometimes the details went on for so long I feel it was easy to get distracted. I wasn't able to read this book as fast as I normally do simply because I found my thoughts getting off track and it was hard to come back to the story.
One of the most fascinating things was the depth and the knowledge of the herbs and symbolism. It was really, really interesting and tied into the story very well.
I love that this book really keeps you wondering who the antagonist really is and it wasn't until the interviews towards the end that I had any inkling and even then I was still guessing at times due to wording and clues put throughout the dialogue beyond that.
One of the most bothersome things to me is the murderers demise and the uncertainty of what happened to him. So many questions...
With all of this said, if you enjoy mystery novels I highly recommend this! Nolen definitely has a gift! I also really recommend The Dry to young adult readers who enjoy sci-fi.

Deadly Thyme edition by RL Nolen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Deadly Thyme has everything a terrific book should great writing, realistic characters, and an incredible story. It was a true page-turner that kept me guessing until the very end. I’m so glad I read it, and have recommended it to all my friends!
I met the author in Houston and shortly after purchased both Deadly Thyme for myself and the Dry for my son. I found the book a smooth read and it was a challenge to figure out the identity of the killer. This book wasn't a cookie cutter type and I'm glad to have run into the author!
Ruth Butler is content, safe, and secure in a village on England's southern coast until she suffers a parent's worst nightmare. Her daughter disappears. Annie has been kidnapped by a serial killer, a maniac who leaves behind herbs as clues about his insane motives while hiding in plain sight, living the life of a normal resident of the town. As the mystery of his identity is peeled back in layers, the bond between Ruth and Annie, and later between Ruth and the lead investigator, emerge as counterweights to the killer's evil purposes.
There is a lot to interest a mystery reader in this book. The author captures perfectly the atmosphere of the small English town, its inhabitants, and its police. The characters are authentic, likeable, interesting, and sometimes eccentric. For me, the blood-thirsty serial killer is the show-stopper. I couldn't put the book down as it sped toward its suspenseful conclusion. This one is a special read, exciting and fun.
Very enjoyable read ... when I had to stop reading I was anxious to get back to it. The characters were well-developed and I had no inkling of "whodunit" until the end. In retrospect I should have guessed for a good reason, but don't want to spoil it for whoever reads it in the future. Well worth the time spent!
I enjoyed this book very much although it does require some patience to get through it. It's a little slow throughout the book but it's a well conceived plot with exceptional character development! Unfortunately, I figured out about halfway through who the protagonist was but it was still entertaining and unexpected in reading the story unfold. It's a very good book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys British crime novels and psychological thrillers.
Well this was certainly a different kind of read for me and right to the end, I wasn't sure I liked the style of writing of this author. But I will say that I couldn't stop reading because the storyline did hook me and I couldn't wait to find out what happens next so I guess the author did her job because I kept on reading. Their were times I stopped and scratched my head and said "what?" So for me, it was not a big hit but it certainly kept me coming back to find out what happens next. I figured out who it was right from the start so that was no surprise. Not a great book but an entertaining one at best.
I read this book in a couple of sittings. It is a good book. I love England after living there for three years when my husband was in the US AF. That was 50 years ago. We took a motor trip and got as far as Lands End. I think that is in Cornwall, or as close as we got to it. Anyway, if you like intrigue and mystery along with learning about the area in which the story takes place, you are in for a treat. The reason I gave the book four stars rather than five is that there were places where the pace of the story dragged some. Not enough to stop reading , though! Also, I had a bit of a problem having to stop now and again to figure which person was where and how why. That may have just been me, though, and not the author. I think most people would like this book, as did I.
