I was fascinated by the early history of the 30s in Colorado and there was a lot of information about the gold mining where the murders were set. Roman historian Theocritus Lucius Westborough is there as being a stock holder of the mine. The pace was a little slow for me as I had to grasp several new terms about the mining. But the mystery is up to the same quality as the author's other books. I'm only sorry he didn't write more and I hope Rue Morgue publishes the remaining ones. Certainly recommended.Product details

Blind Drifts Clyde B Clason 9781601870728 Books Reviews
Professor Westborough is up against it in this novel. There he is in a gold mining community in Colorado - an old man, small and easily tired, and he's going to have to don heavy boots and descend into open pits and dark tunnels in search of bodies and murderers.
Westborough has just inherited shares in a gold mine from his deceased brother. As a major shareholder, his vote is critical at the next board meeting on a controversial decision. But Westborough never takes any action without due consideration. This involves getting a thorough education in gold mining. Watching the professor expand his vocabulary of mining terms is amusing. Meanwhile people start disappearing and getting shot at all around him. Naturally he's drawn into an investigation. Fortunately, the hale and hearty sheriff admires Westborough and his ingenious deductions, and is willing to partner with him.
The professor's methods are, as usual, quite charming. Quoting an ancient Roman poet or Greek historian always gets his deductive juices flowing, while baffling everyone around him.
The professor is quite naughty in this book, telling boldfaced lies to extract information, and even engaging in criminal acts. It worries him to see his moral fiber degenerating, but it's entertaining for the reader.
So I found this book delightful. The mining ambience was a definite plus. A blind drift, by the way, is a mining passage that goes nowhere - a dead-end. Lots of dead-ends in the plot too!
