I bought this book, figuring I had nothing to lose because the price was right. Actually, I had a lot to gain. It's the story of a young girl whose mother was insane and father was an absentee drunk and what happened to the girl after her mother died. However, the real story is about CeeCee, the young heroine, coming to terms with her past and learning to love and be loved. I will admit there are parts of the story that are a bit hard to believe, including the basic premise that CeeCee's mother had so totally lost her mind and no one did anything about the mother or her child's situation. Some of the stories told about her mother are too hard to swallow. An aunt who had not been in touch with the family in some time arriving on the day of the mother's funeral was a little odd, too. However, the book still has a good storyline that will keep you enthralled. I'm not going to go into details of the story line. I'll allow you to follow CeeCee through the new chapter of her "Life book" when she moves from Ohio to live with her Great Aunt in Georgia. I will tell you some of the things you'll find in the book that might surprise you. The book is a story that touches on issues of race and the Deep South mentality in the mid 60's. It doesn't shy away from issues even though, overall, it's a light hearted story. It's got a lot of good lessons worth reading tucked in between the basic lesson of the strength of women and their friends. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

This book not only captivated me, it made me cry one moment and in the next chapter I laughed out loud! The author made me believe the characters were real therefore I was invested in each one as though I knew then personally. Perhaps, being a Southerner gave me insight into the crazy cast off characters in a good way. I've known people like Cee Cee's mother so it was not a far fetched notion for me to believe in the way she acted. Sometimes, I had to laugh or cry. I Loved the story line, the cast of characters, the escapades of some of the more eccentric characters, and the very real human drama being acted out on the pages of Cee Cee's dysfunctional family. At times sad, at times hysterical, but at the story's heart Love wins! I Loved this book and it will forever remain one of my favorites!! Thank you Beth Hoffman for sharing Cee Cee's story with us! Somehow, I just know she is a real person. Have you considered a sequel?? Oh, how marvelous it would be to reimmerse myself into the continuing story of Cee Fee Honeycutt!!!!

It took me a while to get back to this book and I'm glad that I did. Miss Hoffman's word smithing is stupendous. Reading about CeeCee Honeycutt's summer of healing encounters with the women of Savanah GA was at times raucous, polite, shameful, and exquisite. CeeCee's telling of a situation was priceless. "Dad spoke in clipped consonants and hard-edged vowel that bumped into walls and faded...". I could hear CeeCee's voice as she shared her thoughts with me about her first summer in Savanah GA. The garden party with the large punchbowl of Long Island Iced Tea will be a long happy & raucous memory.
It reminded me about "The Secret Life of Bees".
Read this book. It's good for the soul.
I loved this book. It held my attention from beginning to the end. There were parts that made you laugh and made you cry. CeCe was in a dysfunctional family. Her father worked away all the time and her mother had lost her mind. At least CeCe had a real friend in an older lady that helped make life a little easier. When her mother passed away and her father couldn't or wouldn't take care of her, she had a great aunt that took her in but she had to leave Ohio and her old friend. She moved to Charleston, SC and found out her great aunt was more than financially capable of taking care of her. Her great aunt had a huge house and a maid. The maid was the one who really took care of her while her great aunt took care of business with the organizations that she supported. CeCe had many with great adventures with the maid and her friends. In the end her old friend from Ohio come to live with them too.
The good-- this is a well-written story with engaging, eccentric characters, reminiscent of wonderful southern tales such as The Help and Steel Magnolias.

The peculiar-- the only two male characters are a highly-flawed father and a hateful, racist thief. This gender-polarization struck me as quite odd.

The thought-provoking-- set in 1967, these appealing white women live in relative luxury, funded by deceased husbands. In an era of civil rights turmoil and a nascent feminist movement, it seems to me these issues might have been touched upon.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.
